Agave parrasana

In Southeastern Coahulia outside of the wine growing region of Parras between 4500-8000' grows Agave parrasana. The canyon where they grow is yet another uniquely gorgeous area of Mexico. In a typical SUV you can rent Mexico, the long bumpy washed out dirt road through pine-oak chapparal will eventually win out and you have to get out and do some hiking. Once you get high enough up you'll be rewarded with beautiful blue compact Agave parrasanas dotting the mountainside. Agave parrasana forms a tight rosette and the new teeth make attractive imprints on the adjacent leaves. Generally solitary, but occadsionally offsetting, this species is hardy to the mid-teens. Above an old mine, also in Coahuila state, is another locality that has become completely inaccessible without a good 4x4. That is something I have not been fortunate enough to have when in this area. For now at least, I will have to dream of what it is like there. Plants are currently in 5" & will be shipped bare root.
