In early 2019 Altman Plants began distributing a mystery heteracanthae plant initially labeled as Agave purpusorum, a defunct name that has been sunk under Agave ghiesbreghtii, and then changed it to Agave horrida v. perotensis. Kelly Griffin grew the seed and told me it came from Oaxaca on a trip he did close to 10 years prior, while employed at Rancho Soledad Nursery. However, he wasn’t 100%, and admitted it could have been a different state. Agave horrida v. perotensis grows near Perote, Vera Cruz, hence the name, perotensis. A state that borders Oaxaca to the west. This plant does seem quite distinct from the Perote plants—their form is much more robust, with leaves that are both larger, longer & much wider than horrida v. perotensis. I was fortunate enough to obtain several nice plants from Kelly for my garden, and made this selection 'White Fang' for it's exceptional teeth, shape & form. A strong grower that remains solitary with a moderate growth rate. The original clone has survived temps in the low 30's in the ground. Plants will be shipped bare root and are currently in 5" pots.
